Currently, people have a strong desire to consume a wide variety of foods, leading to the displacement of traditional foods by foreign cuisine in many countries. This trend has negative implications for both families and communities. I agree with this viewpoint to a great extent, a stance I will elaborate on in the following paragraphs with pertinent reasons and examples.
One compelling argument for my position is the detrimental impact of international foods on health. These foods often contain high levels of unhealthy oils and fats, such as butter instead of healthier alternatives like vegetable oils, increasing the risk of various health conditions like diabetes, obesity, and heart disease. Moreover, the shift towards consuming fast food outside the home undermines family bonds, as family members forego quality time spent eating homemade meals together. For instance, in India, there has been a rise in health problems in recent years due to the increased consumption of international foods.
Additionally, the disappearance of traditional and historical foods signifies a loss of cultural heritage. As people increasingly opt for fast food as a regular dietary choice over their own national cuisine, the significance of traditional foods diminishes. Even on special occasions like weddings, festivals, and other celebrations, people tend to choose international foods, leading to a decline in the appreciation and popularity of their nation’s culinary identity. Consequently, a nation may lose the cultural value associated with its cuisine on a global scale.
However, there are some who hold a different opinion. They argue that the availability of diverse flavors in foreign cuisine enriches culinary experiences. It is true that modern consumers seek a variety of tastes and flavors in their diet, and international cuisine often offers a broader spectrum of choices than local dishes. For example, Italian, Mexican, and Chinese foods are widely appreciated in many developing countries for their diverse and appealing flavors. This is evident in the increasing demand for international cuisine, such as in India, where the popularity of foreign foods continues to rise.
In conclusion, while international foods do offer a wide array of culinary options and flavors, their consumption can have negative repercussions on health and contribute to the erosion of local and cultural food traditions.
