Band 7+: In many countries women and men are working full time. It is therefore, logical for women and men to share household works. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With the growing emphasis on gender equality in numerous life aspects, it is no wonder that both men and working are engaging in full-time jobs in many countries. Considering this, there is a view that both genders should be equally responsible for household chores. Despite certain drawbacks of gender division of household labor, I believe it is, for the most part, a change for the better, meaning I agree with this proposal.

It is undeniable that equal distribution of household tasks among both genders has several downsides, one of which is practical issues. Women have long been found familiar with common household chores like cooking, child-caring and cleaning while most men do not have experience of how to carry out them. With this in mind, requiring males to assume a fair share of the responsibility at home can lead to poor performance by the latter, which could cause familial conflicts in extreme cases, affecting family dynamics negatively. As a result, this situation can result in added stress for both men and women after long hours of working, preventing them from living a quality life. Furthermore, sharing responsibilities can be challenged by societal expectations. In some cultures, especially in Eastern ones, there is an ingrained notion that women should bear the whole responsibility at home. By breaking traditional gender roles, men may face social stigma in their society, say, in their circles of friends or relatives.

However, benefits to sharing household responsibilities for dual-income families are more significant. If both men and women have a full-time job, it is not fair to expect only the latter to accomplish household work. This is because not only does this cause burnout and chronic fatigue for women, but also prevents their productivity at work. This chaos makes it difficult for them to strike a balance between work and life, as it leaves them little to no time to relax or pursue personal hobbies. Therefore, a fair division of household duties among both genders allows them to achieve a work-life balance. Another merit, somewhat related to the previous, is that promoting fairness in the home helps strengthen family bonds. By relieving the burden of their partner, can a man show affection and love, fostering mutual respect. With both partners having respect for one another, there is little potential for disagreements.

In conclusion, even though the harmonious division of domestic labor at home can cause problems like practical difficulties for men and social challenges, its benefits, such as a better work-life balance and strong family relationships are far too great to ignore.
