There is a difference in preferences of citizens in using means of transport between some metropolises in the world. Some cities have people prefer using bikes rather than cars, while others witness a reversed trend. This may stem from the difference in facilities offered and current conditions. In my opinion, I believe that enhancing using bicycles is a more sustainable practice.
One of the main driving forces behind the ubiquity of bikes in certain cities is the amenities offered for this type of vehicle. For example, Amsterdam, which is famous for the cycling culture of city dwellers, provides many schemes for the bikers like renting bicycles or special lanes. This is essential in terms of encouraging people to cycle more because many individuals consider that inadequate support on the streets is the main restriction that prevents them from using bikes. Many of them are concerned about the dangerous situations when they use this vehicle in the same lanes with motorbikes or cars. When they are equipped with better offers, they will be willing to adapt to use bicycles. Moreover, in many cities, because of the geographical locations and urban plans, it may be impossible to travel by bike. This means of transport is suitable to travel a short distance. That prevents people from using them to travel for a long journey or in mountainous areas. Many cities with their own design require dwellers to move far away each time they travel. For instance, in Beijing China, it can take about one hour to go to the company from one’s house even when using public transportation, which makes it impossible to use bikes there.
Despite some difficulties in adapting bikes in certain regions, I believe that using bicycles in cities is a better choice. Firstly, it is a sustainable practice compared to other vehicles which use fossil fuels to run and exhaust toxic fumes that exaggerate the air quality in the cities, especially when the current air pollution in cities becomes worse day after day. Additionally, cycling around the cities can also be considered as an opportunity for doing exercise. This is because cyclists need to use energy and cooperate muscles to run the bikes. It is vital for the city dwellers who rarely have a chance to go to the gym or practice sports because of the hectic lifestyles.
In conclusion, I think that the difference in habits of using cars and bikes in many regions in the world is the result of the development of facilities and existing conditions. But I lean towards the more eco-friendly practice as it can reduce certain problems and enhance the health of the users.
