Over the years there has been an ongoing debate about whether to convert public parks and open spaces into gardens where local residents can grow their fruits and vegetables. Many people argue that the development will provide fresh food to the locals. Some people believe that it is a negative development as it reduces open space and sales of street vendors. From my perspective, it is a negative transformation and its disadvantages significantly outweighs the advantages.
Proponents of the notion support that locals inhabitants will able to grow their organic fruits and vegetables. Therefore, they can consume organic food and live healthy lifestyle. Moreover, the increasing complains about the quality of the food have engendered the need to explore alternatives of it. However, the idea to convert public parks into gardens is vague. I believe that by imposing strict laws and food quality standards, this problem can be mitigated. For instance, developed countries have noticeably strict laws and punishments regarding malpractices in food quality.
Nowdays, the wide adaption of mobile phones have resulted into children spending more time at their home. Playing physical sports such as cricket and football helps in overall personal growth of the children. Nevertheless, young and elderly people visit parks at daily bases for yoga and to exercise. Admittedly, public parks and open spaces are required for exhibitions and various cultural festivals. Furthermore, many small vendors relies on the sales of fruits and vegetables. By implementing such policy, their source of income will be at risk and their family will suffer from unprecedented circumstances.
As mentioned above, the advantages of the idea only benefits locals but effects negatively to other aspects of the society. The disadvantages of gardens drastically outweigh the advantages. In my opinion, the notion of transforming parks into garden will occur detrimental effects to the vendors. The government should impose penalties for any miscouncut.
