Overweight and obesity has become an issue among children in some countries, which is considered to be caused by eating too much fast food. On that account, many argue that the most effective method to solve that problem is to forbid schools from providing fast food for students. In my opinion, this statement can be helpful but is not the most desired way, since fast food in school is not the only source of calories, which is the real reason results in overweight and obesity.
Admittedly, students are not allowed to eat fast food in school can help them reduce the intake of calories. However, it is evident that this effect is limited in schooling period and campuses, when considering the fact that they still have opportunity to have junk food out school. In addition, some food loved by children, like sweetened drinks and desserts, are also the source of high calories. Therefore, banning fast food in school is not comprehensive in terms of reversing the increasing trend of childhood overweight and obesity, which proves that it is not the best way.
There are, however, better alternatives in decreasing the overweight and obese rate of children. On the one hand, in order to limit the intake of calories, it is better for governments to wildly popularize the harms caused by that problem to children by utilizing every information source like TV, social media and the Internet, thereby enhancing children’s subjective willingness to eat less junk food. On the other hand, schools are suggested to allot more time for students to do physical exercise to consume excessive calories. In comparison to the effort from schools only, these measures are more comprehensive and effective, which serves the target of saving children from overweight and obesity issue better.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that banning fast food in school would be beneficial for children to lose some weight. Nevertheless, it may fail to be the best way to achieve this purpose.
