Band 9: In some countries an increasing number of people are suffering from health problems as a result of eating too much fast food. It is therefore necessary for governments to impose a higher tax on this kind of food. To what extend do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the modern world, a significant number of people who are suffering from health-related diseases from unhealthy food have increased in some parts of the world. It is claimed that the introduction of a higher amount of tax on convenience food appears to be effective; however, I agree that this is one way to deal with the problem, but education and modifying recipes must taken into consideration.

There are a number of reasons why an increased tax imposition can reduce the consumption of high-fat foods. Firstly, by raising prices, the government might discourage the consumption of calorie-dense foods and make people aware of the health risks associated with such meals. Secondly, the amount of revenue collected from the extra tax can be invested in preventive health measures, such as nutrition education, physical activity programs, and subsidies for healthier food options. This approach would both reduce demand for unhealthy food and support healthier lifestyles.

On the other hand, taxation alone is highly unlikely to tackle public health issues. For some low-income individuals in developed countries, fast food is an affordable and accessible source of meals, since organic food does not stretch to the budget. A high tax, therefore, can be a financial burden for them without changing their eating habits. Moreover, people may continue buying processed food despite higher prices, just as with smoking. Instead, the government should promote healthy eating in schools and workplaces and impose stricter regulations on unhealthy food companies to make modification in food ingredients.

In conclusion, introducing an extra tax on fast food could play a vital role in improving public health, but it is not a proper solution. A combination of taxation, education, and industry regulation is essential to achieve sustainable change in dietary behavior.
