Having a child later in life has become common among many people in many parts of the world. While there several reasons of this trend, I think it is largely negative as it reduces time that could be spent with children, and makes parents less caring for their children.
On the one hand, there are some clear reasons behind a delayed parenthood. At first, nowadays young people have a strong desire to follow their interests, such as travelling, education, sports, and so on. As a result, they spend their most precious time pursuing these activities, while postponing having children. Take most European countries, where following interests has become usual for most people, as an example; In fact, these countries have been observing a significant increase in the normal age of brides and grooms for the last decade. In addition, the stereotype that starting a family brings overwhelming financial demands leads young people to seek financial stability before getting married. In doing so, having children is delayed.
On the other hand, there some main reasons why delayed parenthood is negative development. At first, postponing parenthood reduces the mutual time between children and their parents and can create generation gap in the family. As a result, there would be misunderstandings between children and parents which lead to serious conflicts between parents and their offspring. Moreover, when people marry or have children later in life, they can become more addicted to their work rather than interested in raising children, and they tend to prefer financial gains over spending time with their family. As a result, it makes children feel lonely and forces them to become independent at an early age.
In conclusion, although people choose to postpone having children to pursue personal interests and achieve financial stability, this trend is largely disadvantageous. Delayed parenthood significantly reduces the quality time that parents and children can share, often resulting in a generation gap. Furthermore, older parents who are deeply focused on their careers and financial gains may become less sympathetic and less attentive to their children’s emotional needs.
