In recent times some different criminal trials in the law court are telecast on the television for the general public. I firmly believe that the benefits of this telecast outweigh the drawbacks because this can promote public awareness and trust in the judicial system, and also send a message to all criminals to stop criminal activity.
On the one hand, broadcasting court cases enhances people’s understanding of the legal process. By witnessing this case trial, people can understand how justice is served, which can boost their confidence in the judicial system. This live trial also holds legal institutions accountable, ensuring justice is served without bias or corruption. For example, in Sweden after telecasting the case trial on TV the corruption rate of legal institutions reduced from 45% to 7% which shows the impact of this program. Similarly, another benefit of this live stream is that it also gives a message to the criminal to stop their activity immediately otherwise they have to face serious consequences for their act. By watching these live criminal cases most criminal might stop their act and surrender them under the law which helps reduce the crime rate and ensure the proper establishment of law and order. To exemplify, in India, a terrorist group surrendered with their 35 members after they witnessed a live stream of the case of another terrorist group.
On the other hand, despite some advantages, this telecast has significant drawbacks. Firstly, televised trials can compromise the privacy of the individuals involved, especially the defendants and victims. Public exposure may lead to emotional distress for those directly impacted by the case, particularly in sensitive matters such as sexual assault or domestic violence. Secondly, there is also a risk of exaggerating this legal proceeding for entertainment. Media might focus on dramatic elements more than local facts which hamper the dignity of the judicial system.
In conclusion, although broadcasting criminal cases can do potential harm to individuals, the benefits of increased transparency and public engagement with the legal system outweigh the disadvantages
