In many parts of the world, people are encouraged to use public transport instead of driving their own cars. As using the public transport would be a more environmental friendly and affordable choice, I wholeheartedly believe the benefits of this policy outweigh the drawbacks.
Choosing public transport over private vehicles brings a remarkable advantage to the environment. One of the major source of greenhouse gases is operating vehicles. Greenhouse gasses would cause global warming to become more severe, and hence other environmental problems such as risen sea level and extreme weathers around the globe. Public transport, which carries many passengers in one single trip, could effectively reduce the number of operating vehicles, and therefore a reduced amount of emitted greenhouse gases.
Using public transport is also a more affordable travelling method. Purchasing and driving private vehicles could be very costly. In my country, the selling price of private cars have been increasing over the years. Besides the vehicles, the price of fuels is also seeing an increasing trend. Nonetheless, other related expenses such as parking fee and maintanance fee could also be financial burdens of using private cars. Choosing public transport, in contrast, would be much more affordable especially to those with a tight budget.
To conclude, as choosing public transport would be beneficial to the environment, meanwhile being a more affordable alternative to private cars, it is believed that government policies to encourage the use of public transport has more advantages than downsides.
