In some nations, it is a common practice that youths are supported to take a year off for working or travelling after completing high school and before commencing their university studies. In my opinion, it is very beneficial for the youngsters however there will be some negative outcomes too. In this essay, advantages and disadvantages will be explored and discussed thoroughly.

First of all, the advantage of taking a year gap between high school and higher education is to clarify their goals. There will be plenty of time for self-reflection opportunities. Young individuals are able to use this time to evaluate their interests and passions. Moreover, the second advantage is to create life experiences which could also enrich young people’s personal growth and development. Furthermore, working can offer them a real-world experience.

However, despite those advantages, some disadvantages are also found from this matter. First example of it is delaying career opportunities and advancement. This could be a fatal mistake because young people who take a gap year may miss job opportunities and this could potentially lead to delaying their career. Secondly, academic challenges may appear. People who find comfort in working may struggle to go back to the academic environment.

In conclusion, taking a gap year is encouraged for young people but carries its advantages and disadvantages. It is crucial to be extremely considerate for the negative impacts that may arise even though it has many potential positive impacts. Finally, the decision to take a gap year should be made based on the person’s goals and circumstances, as it will not be the same with every human being.
