With the rapid advancements in technology within the vehicle manufacturing sector, it is becoming increasingly apparent that the future of transportation is shifting towards the automation of various modes of transit, rendering them driverless. I contend that the benefits of autonomous vehicles significantly surpass the potential drawbacks, which are relatively minor in comparison.
Driverless vehicles have significant advantages over automobiles driven by humans, mainly because of the reduced number of road accidents caused by human error. For instance, cars are the main cause of roadway disasters, leaving people severely injured or even dead, all due to distracted or drunk drivers. With modes of transportation not needing drivers, the human error factor can undoubtedly be taken out of the equation. Furthermore, self-driven vehicles can optimize traffic flow by reducing congestion and choosing the fastest roads using real-time data, which will upgrade the time passengers spend on the road.
On the other hand, there is a drawback to choosing self-driven vehicles over human-operated ones. The main issue is the number of jobless people that will result from the automation. Millions of people who work as bus drivers, truck drivers, and taxi drivers will lose their main source of income. Another point to consider is that self-driven vehicles rely on software and internet connectivity, which makes them vulnerable to cyberattacks or technical malfunctions that can lead to serious incidents endangering passengers’ lives.
In summary, I think driverless vehicles bring numerous gains to people’s lives, through aspects such as safety and efficient mobility, but there are disadvantages that cannot be ignored.
