Undoubtedly, historical hamlets instilled a sense of community into the majority of local residents, yet this is not the case in our today’s world. As they now live in mega cities, they recognize nobody but people around them. To my mind, there were a number of merits and demerits of living in small villages, and this essay will attempt to consider both of them diligently with my personal thoughts.
One of the noticeable benefits of living in a small community in the past was safety. In other words, as everyone was reliable, honest, and loyal, there were not any criminals who could damage their property, ranging from their homes to farms. Instead, they led a peaceful and tranquil life all the time, backing one another up in harsh times. In addition, the quality of air should be taken into consideration. What I mean by this is that the air in previous villages was so clear that people could breath in and out without difficulty, keeping the whole environment clean. This could in turn prevent people from developing infectious illnesses derived from their domestic animals or contaminations. Last but not least, locals always enjoyed the beauty of their natural settings. This means that since every place was surrounded by a group of trees, unique flowers, and rare birds, it seemed pleasing to the eye for ancient villagers. Not only did it assist them to reduce their stress levels considerably, but it also enabled them to embrace the natural environment itself, unwinding for a long time.
Despite the positive sides of living a small village, many frequently encountered some setbacks in their daily lives. First of all, there were not any facilities related to education. As a consequence, the majority of teenagers and children failed to acquire decent knowledge although they strived to study in what they were interested. Besides, the loss of experts having brilliant expertise worsened this situation even more, which resulted in them becoming illiterate. Additionally, small villages in the past did not have adequate healthcare systems. Consequently, many people suffered from serious pain for long hours until the ambulance came to take them to the main hospital. In some cases, they eventually faced imminent death after keeping waiting for doctors. Finally, there were not any specially employed staff who could have the strength to protect the entire zone from danger. This allowed criminals to steal what they wanted, depriving people of their wealth. Local inhabitants were so benign and trustworthy that they even did not know that people around them turned out to be offenders. As a result, most villagers happened to feel insecure, worrying about everything in their immediate surroundings.
In conclusion, while there were upsides of living in a small community such as security of areas, fresh air, and beautiful atmosphere, it had some downsides, including the absence of amenities related to education, quality healthcare, and the probability of external risks.
