In the past, people typically chose to settle in one place, whereas today, many people decide to move between various locations. This shift in lifestyle offers significant advantages, yet it also presents a range of challenges, which I will elaborate on below.
In terms of benefits, becoming a migrant worker can offer greater employment opportunities, as job availability in many regions does not align with the number of job seekers. For example, Indonesia’s demographic bonus, with its growing productive-age population, has been followed by an increase in unemployment. As a result, many young people seek work abroad to support their livelihoods. Furthermore, interacting with new people in various places broadens perspectives and expands networks. When individuals move to different regions, they are exposed to diverse cultures and ways of thinking. For instance, becoming acquainted with people from different ethnic backgrounds and regions fosters tolerance and mutual respect. Moreover, connecting with individuals from various professions can lead to valuable collaborations and career opportunities.
Conversely, since humans are inherently social, adapting to a new society requires time and effort. Individuals often experience culture shock due to differences in language, culture, and social norms. For instance, understanding the various accents and dialects within a country like Indonesia cannot be achieved instantly, it takes time and effort to adapt effectively. Additionally, relocating to a new place requires a significant amount of money. This includes costs for a new residence, transportation, and, for those with children, schooling. Therefore, careful financial planning is essential, particularly for additional expenses such as accommodation to meet the needs of the family.
After considering both perspectives, from my standpoint, moving to different places offers several positive outcomes, including increased employment opportunities and expanded perspectives and networks. However, it also comes with drawbacks, such as the time and effort required to adapt and the substantial financial investment involved.
