Band 9: In today's world of advanced science and technology, we still greatly value our artists such as musicians, painters and writers. What can art tell us about life that science and technology cannot?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Although science and technology have improved tremendously, society still puts a strong emphasis on valuing people who perform artistic activities such as musicians, painters and writers. Art has left a profound mark throughout history, and our appreciation of it can provide us with important perspectives that science and technology cannot offer.

Science explains a sunset as a scattering of lights particles in the atmosphere. It tells us why the sky turns red, how wavelengths shift, and how dust affects color intensity. Art, however, captures something science cannot measure, which is the feeling of standing still as the day fades, the quiet realization that time is passing, and the strange mixture of sadness and peace that twilight brings.

Science studies the brain through neurons, electrical signals, and chemical reactions. It maps memory, emotion and decision-making into observable patterns. Art, on the other hand, portrays lived experience of those processes. A novel about dementia does not describe synapses; however, it lets us feel confusion, fear, and the slow fading of identity.

Science asks whether we can eliminate disease by editing human DNA. With modern biotechnology, the answer increasingly appears to be yes. Art, however, asks whether we should redesign human life at all. Through speculative fiction and film, it imagines worlds where perfection replaces diversity and individuality becomes engineered rather than discovered.

In conclusion, science can explain the mechanisms behind human life, but art helps us understand its meaning. It gives form to emotions, preserves experiences, and challenges us to question the consequences of scientific progress. Ultimately, while science tells us how the world works, art reminds us why that world matters to us.
