Band 7+: International sporting events are costly and bring problems to the hosting country. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It has been argued that international sporting competitions can be a financial burden and negatively affect the hosting country. While I concur with this viewpoint, as sporting events have the potential to impact a country’s economy adversely, I also believe that such an event can provide an opportunity for the host country to capitalise on increased tourism and promote their country as a desirable destination.

On the one hand, there is a significant demand for live events among the majority of individuals, which sometimes entails travelling to foreign countries. When individuals travel to foreign countries, they tend to purchase various products that can aid in the development and growth of the local economy. Numerous high-profile sports tournaments command exorbitant prices for their admission tickets, prompting the government to undertake initiatives to construct large-scale stadiums that can accommodate a more significant number of attendees. It is worth considering that tourists can positively impact the hosting country’s economy by purchasing goods and utilising various services. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the detrimental effects of tourism on the environment can be mitigated while still benefiting the community.

On the other hand, managing large-scale events can be a costly and challenging endeavour for both companies and governments. Organising and hosting such events require considerable financial investment and strategic planning to ensure seamless execution. For example, Azerbaijan has been hosting Judo and F1 races each year since 2016, necessitating meticulous calculation of earnings and expenditures to avoid potential issues. In addition, a bunch of countries must implement strict penalties to reduce the damage caused by tourists, and such measures should involve regulating tour operators and other relevant organisations to mitigate such problems as environmental pollution and economic instability. This will help ensure the sustainable development of the tourism industry and promote positive outcomes for all stakeholders involved.

In conclusion, host countries might exercise discretion concerning capping ticket prices to maintain a balance between expenditure and revenue. Additionally, it is incumbent upon tourists to abide by a set of regulations to avoid any consequential punitive measures.
