International tourism, in this day and age, has bloomed due to the advancements of several modern means of transportation, and it provides numerous benefits to the host countries as well as travelers. Although overseas travel has some drawbacks, I would argue that there are far more benefits.
It cannot be denied that cross-border journeys have quite a few disadvantages to travelers and destination countries, namely cultural misunderstandings as well as language barriers for tourists and potential pollution for the destinations. With regard to the former, visiting other countries means that they are living in an unfamiliar environment with a far more different culture than their homeland, leading to awkward situations or worse potential offense. For instance, wearing outside shoes inside someone’s house is not appropriate and might be considered disrespectful. Moreover, not everyone will learn the native destination country language. If they are visiting some local destinations where there a not many residents who use English then it might be hard for them to communicate with local people when buying goods or asking for help. The host countries might also suffer from potential pollution. The large number of tourists also brings a large amount of waste, which might overload the waste management systems. Pristine beaches may become littered with plastic debris, while air quality grows bad because of the large quantity of vehicles.
Despite the negatives mentioned above, I believe that international tourism has far more positives. Firstly, traveling overseas offers numerous opportunities for individuals to explore other nations’ cultures which can be a great chance for personal growth and education. It will also be an opportunity for travelers to learn a new language, especially from native speakers. Furthermore, cross-border travel can bring tourists to landscapes where there is natural beauty, unique architecture, or somewhere both, which may be an unforgettable experience for them to remember. Host countries, similarly, get substantial benefits from tourism. The economic growth, driven by tourism development, will give the countries an improvement in infrastructure, environment and residents’ living standards. For instance, in Croatia, tourism development has spurred substantial infrastructure improvements, including modernized airports, enhanced road networks, and renovated historical sites. Tourism will also offer multiple job opportunities for residents, from servicing to goods purchasing. Moreover, the interactions between locals and visitors promote cultural exchange, potentially improving international relations.
In conclusion, even though the disadvantages of international tourism are undeniable, these shortcomings can be mitigated by some initiatives. Personally, I still believe that the benefits of it overshadow the drawbacks.
