Band 9: It is expected that there will be a higher Proportion of older people than that of young people in many countries in the future? Do you think it is a positive or negative development?

In the coming decades, older individuals are expected to comprise a larger proportion of the population compared to younger ones in many countries. This shift is largely attributed to advances in healthcare, improved living standards, and declining birth rates. While some argue that this demographic change will present significant challenges, I believe that it is an overall negative turn of events.

On one hand, there are compelling arguments in favor of a larger elderly population and the potential benefits it can bring to the nation. First, it is indisputable that senior citizens possess a wealth of knowledge and experience that can enhance productivity across various fields. Their extensive training and practical experience enable them to tackle demanding roles effectively. For instance, the agricultural sector increasingly relies on older workers who have a deep understanding of farming techniques and traditional harvesting methods. This expertise allows them to produce abundant food supplies, thereby ensuring food security for the nation. Additionally, the older generation often provides emotional and financial support to others. Many retirees, who are financially secure and have more free time, participate in volunteer work or charitable projects. They often assist those living in poverty-stricken areas by providing essential resources such as food and shelter, making a significant contribution to improving living conditions for those in need.

On the other hand, it is crucial to recognize the potential downsides associated with an aging population. One primary concern is the lack of young, physically capable workers, which could result in a shortage of affordable labor. The younger generation plays a vital role in blue-collar industries and contributes significantly to manufacturing and economic growth. A reduced availability of young workers may impose additional financial burdens on countries, potentially leading to economic stagnation. Moreover, a larger elderly population inevitably places pressure on healthcare systems. Older individuals are more susceptible to chronic and often expensive health conditions, such as cardiovascular diseases or strokes, which require continuous medical attention. This inevitably strains healthcare infrastructure, necessitating substantial investment in medical facilities and services. As a result, increased spending on healthcare may divert resources from other essential sectors, such as education and transportation, potentially leading to long-term financial challenges for the nation.

In conclusion, while a larger proportion of elderly citizens can have positive effects, such as improving national agriculture and enhancing living standards, I believe that the overall impact of this demographic shift may be more detrimental than beneficial. Therefore, it is essential for governments to implement policies aimed at increasing fertility rates and delaying retirement, which would help rejuvenate the population and mitigate the challenges associated with an aging society.
