Most people believe that teaching the difference between right and wrong for children at an early age is important. Some people claim that punishment is necessary to help them learn this distinction. Personally, I partly agree with this opinion, from which I will discuss both of the two views in this essay.
On the one hand, at a young age, the children don’t have a strong mind and perspective to distinguish between the good and bad things. Therefore, they need parents and teachers to accompany and navigate them in learning. In this process, punishment can teach them to be responsible for their behaviours, from which they could learn about the negative outcomes if they behaved badly.
On the other hand, sometimes the punishment, like fighting children, is not a good way to help them learn this distinction. Without understanding the problems clearly and thoroughly, this type of teaching might somehow build and promote their violent behaviours from an early age. They would be able to fight against their parents and teachers, making them disrespectful.
From both views, I think that punishment should be only used in some cases to teach children to be responsible for their actions, after explaining to them the right and wrong. Instead of fighting, for example, the parents and teachers could punish them by forcing them to do house chores or other activities, giving them the time to rethink their bad behaviors.
In conclusion, the punishment is necessary for parents and teachers to teach children the difference between good and bad at an early age, but it should only be used in the right way.
