The debate over the purpose of public money is ever-present, and it’s even being taken more seriously in this contemporary society. Some argue that public money should be prioritized to encourage a healthy lifestyle rather than to be used for the cure for people who are already suffering from illnesses. From my perspective, I partially agree with this statement, recognizing the beneficial outcomes in both aspects.
On the one hand, the benefits of promoting a healthier lifestyle is undeniable as it is not only beneficial for the healthcare system but also for the nation’s workforce and economy. Firstly, a healthy lifestyle for citizens is the foundation of a productivity and abundant workforce, which leads to a more prosperous economy. A healthy well-being persuades their concentration, alleviates stress and also boosts their cognitive function, which will later result in outstanding work performance. Another point is that it also lightens the burden on the healthcare system, especially in poor countries. By enhancing the citizen’s well-being, less risks of threatening diseases will be made, as well as the healthcare system will not have to conquer a vast amount of patients.
On the other hand, the government should also invest in the treatment of already ill people as it not only ensures long-term prevention but also as a way to present their humanitarian responsibility. Firstly, by finding a cure or maintaining treatment for already existing illnesses, a long-term prevention for the disease will be made . Especially for inherited diseases that heavily affects an amount of unfortunate patients, treatments would benefit them a lot in later generations. Secondly, it is also the government’s responsibility to care for their citizens’ well-being, including those who are ill. Providing access to treatment ensures that individuals receive the care and attention they need to alleviate their sufferings, showing the responsibility of the government.
In summary, both promoting a healthy lifestyle and spending money on the treatment for people who are already ill are equally important. It is recommended that the government should adapt flexible plans that fit their situation.
