It is often argued that travelling is not essential for learning different cultures, as people can gain similar knowledge through books, films, and the Internet. Personally, although learning other national identities only by such forms of media can be cost-effective and convenient, I strongly believe that it can not replace the value of significant experiences from practical travelling.
Admittedly, learning different cultures through books, films, and online platforms can be a practical alternative to travelling. This approach is more affordable and convenient for individuals who have limited budgets, such as students, as they do not need to spend money on transportation, accommodation booking, and other aspects when travelling. By accessing a wide range of cultures through physical media, individuals may have an opportunity to gain knowledge in diverse traditions, norms, and customs without wasting any money. This is not only cost-effective, but also helps people to allocate money to other significant aspects in their daily life.
However, travelling to other places offers first-hand experience, which contains deeper and more authentical knowledge by practically engaging in local culture. By directly interacting with local and native people, travellers may have an ideal opportunity to observe their daily communication, social norms, and cultural traditions in person. For instance, second – hand sources can provide information about local cultures and traditional dishes; however, by only visiting desired places, individuals can even directly immerse in those cultures or taste those dishes, thereby creating unforgettable first-hand experiences. Moreover, such forms of media sometimes provide inappropriate and incomplete information, leading to prejudice about the culture. Therefore, real-life exposure can help people to gain a comprehensive perspective, becoming an irreplaceable method of travelling.
In conclusion, despite its convenience and affordability, learning various cultures through second-hand sources cannot replace the practical value of real – life travelling. Therefore, people can adopt a balanced measure to gain a first – hand experience in travelling, for instance, not wasting money on useless items.
