It is often argued that economic growth dramatically enhances quality of life; however, it can also harm the environment. While economic prosperity improves people’s living conditions that are undeniable, I believe that it poses significant threats to the natural world which can only be addressed through technological progress.
On the one hand, economic development can lead to many environmental issues. First, one of the primary disadvantages is the overexploitation of natural resources. Granted, to support industrial production, people often overexploit natural resources such as forests, raw materials, and fossil fuels; therefore, this causes ecosystem imbalances and resource depletion. Another drawback is mass consumption. As incomes rise, people tend to purchase more, leading to a huge increase in waste, especially plastic and electronic goods which puts immense pressure on waste disposal systems. Despite numerous environmental concerns, it is undenialbe that economic growth primarily enhances quality of life. Thanks to higher income levels, people can easily access quality education, healthcare, and better modern amenities. For instance, in many developed nations, citizens have a higher life expectancy and lower illiteracy rates compared to developing countries, thanks to abundant national budgets.
On the other hand, while the negative environmental impacts of economic progress are clear, it can also help protect the natural world through various technological advancements. The primary measure is investing in green technology. Indeed, prosperous nations have enough financial resouces to research and shift to renewable energy, such as wind, solar, or nuclear energy, rather than coal. A classic example is China, which was once heavily reliant on coal but it is now the world leader in renewable energy investment, especially in solar power and wind turbines. Another essential measure is raising public awareness and implementing stricter environmental law. When people achieve financial stability, they tend to focus more on their quality of life and environmental issues. Futhermore the government will implement stricter emission standards and impose heavy taxes on polluting businesses.
In conclusion, economic development improves people’s living conditions, while this growth can lead to numerous environmental issues like overexploitation of natural resources and mass consumption. However, prosperity allows goverments to solve environment problems, including investing in green technology and raising public awareness and implenting stricter environmental law.
