Due to concerns over climate change and environmental damages caused by individuals in recent years, numerous countries around the world are starting to encourage citizens to track their own carbon footprints via online apps or websites. This aims to bring more awareness to the issue at hand and it could help reduce the negative effects humans have on the planet. However, these systems also raise concerns about privacy and government overreach.
On the one hand, tracking carbon emmissions via websites and apps can play a crucial role when it comes to pinpointing the exact causes for high emission rates and taking the necessary precautions to minimise the potential danger. Using this technology can also raise awareness and inform the general public about the looming threat of ecological crisis. For instance, immense carbon footprint from personalised transportation can drive public transport prices to go down to lessen the risks.
On the other hand, such use of technology poses the risk of supervision, which threathens privacy and personal freedom. Some people don’t want their state to always monitor them as these tracking systems allows the governments to see what someone is doing even when they dont want them to. For example it is possible to learn about someone’s spending, travel, free time and diets based on only their footprints.
Ultimately I think these technologies can be implemented unde rthe condition that they are not as far reaching. Government trust also plays a key role in how the masses will adapt to use these systems
