Band 5+: Many developing countries place a lot of importance on tourism. Why is this? Do you think that this is a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Many third-world countries are tending to broaden their tourism industries nowadays. It’s mainly due to economic growth, and despite the merits, this tendency has negative effect.

One of the main reasons why developing countries are opening doors to the tourism is that it helps to create jobs for locals. If there is a big flow of tourists, there is a need for guides, translators and hotel staff. Moreover, locals even might found their own business targeted to tourists. This leads to the second reason – economic growth. The more hotels and local businesses generates the revenue, the more taxes they pay to the government, hence enriching the country. Those money can then be directed to develop the areas such as healthcare and education, that are especially crucial for third countries.

However, the expansion of tourism can bring several negative effects. One of them is putting nature in danger. Planes are one of the biggest contributors to the air pollution, as they emit enormous quantities of exhaust fumes. Furthermore, not all tourists are abiding to the rules to keep the places clean, and it’s quite challenging to deter littering.Bali beaches are good example, where tourists, expected seeing the beauty of the nature, often encounter harsh reality of rundown beaches, that contain a lot of waste. Not only that, but reliance on tourism might cause serious dependency in terms of economic of the country. Unexpected situations such as wars, disease outbreaks might temporarily suspend the flow of tourists, hence the source of income. Country such as Maldives, where tourism contributes sufficiently large on its economics, had faced hardships during the quarantine.

To conclude, the trend of developing tourism industries in developing countries is caused by potential benefits such as employment generation and taxes. Despite this, I believe that this tendency might have detrimental effect.
