Living abroad is one of the most difficult situations an individual may have to handle in life when they must use a non-native language, leading to serious social problems, as well as practical challenges. However, I agree with this statement.
Changing the living environment presents numerous problems. Firstly, one of the main factors is communication. When we move to a new place, we are completely surrounded by the neighbors who don’t talk the same language with us and have to use theirs for the whole day. Although you may have good scores for that language through many academic tests, it doesn’t indicate that you can fluently communicate and understand a foreigner since in each area they have different accents and ways of pronunciation. If you can’t adapt, not only you encounter obstacles but also have mental health issues such as autism or anxiety. Moreover, lack of fluency in local language can hinder understanding of local culture. Moving abroad means a different life, different language and different customs. We may find it hard toperceive the local traditions like the way people act, work or live. For example, in some countries, people might live in seclusion while in others they might be more open and chatty. From this, it can cause social isolation when they cannot adapt. Meanwhile, there are lots of challenges we may have to face. In terms of work, struggling with new language skills, it might complicate our job. As we cannot show that we have fully adapted to the new life, the company barely will accept your job applications. Besides that, when we don’t have the ability to communicate with the native, it’s hard for us to catch up with the changes and the new project’s requirements. Regarding daily life, the non-native often face legal issues. There are many differences between each country’s law, that’s why if we do not fully comprehend we may get in trouble. For instance, in your country, it’s normal to do this; however, it is not allowed to do so in another country. To alleviate any potential problems, a person is required to make a more detailed plan and research. Firstly, having a support system, such as language learning apps or foreign friends, can help mitigate some of these challenges. Furthermore, if you plan to move abroad, you must have an itinerary about where you would live, is there any supermarket nearby, the neighborhood, public transport and work culture there will be useful in the future. In addition, the mental aspect is still the most important preparation. You must accept the fact that it would be difficult in the beginning although you have prepared, so that it could be less stressful for yourself and you can be proactive when you confront difficulties.
Overall, I agree that the difficulties of living abroad with a non-native language are significant, there are various strategies and support systems available to help individuals navigate these challenges.
