Sports stars have always been an attraction for millennials due to which they are appointed brand ambassadors for a range of products. While society may not benefit from celebrity endorsements, sports persons and manufacturers are privileged. I believe that such a trend has more benefits than drawbacks.
The first benefit of associating with a popular face is that of building a loyal clientele Companies use famous sports persons to convince customers of not only the superior quality of their purchase but also that owning such goods will place them in the exclusive league Furthermore, they foresee a hike in demand for their products since a brand endorsed by a notable athlete is more likely to grab the attention of potential buyers.
Successful stars have a huge fan following and people look up to them as a source of inspiration. Consequently, sports persons can be an effective medium to convey important social messages as they hold the power to influence people. In addition, ads involving sports persons could particularly bring out talent in several national and international sports, although other requirements must be fulfilled to achieve this end.
On the downside, the fact that advertisements are a lucrative mode of income has led many sports stars to promote goods that they might never use or approve. For example, energy drinks for children or vitamin supplements for grown-ups which are banned in some countries are sold in others through endorsements promising health and fitness, while they may be hazardous to health.
All in all, sports stars earn fame and money through endorsements, which is justifiable given their skill and contribution to the world of sport. However, the common man may not experience any advantage through the trend.
