In addition, many extra costs such as tariffs, import taxes, and guarantee fees can be eliminated. As a result, local food may become more affordable for consumers. Furthermore, supporting local food can also create more job opportunities for local residents. For example, farmers and small food producers may sell more products and earn a more stable income. This can improve the living standards of people in rural areas and support the development of local businesses. Another major advantage is related to the environment. If people buy more local food, there will be less demand for long-distance transportation. Consequently, fewer trucks, ships, and airplanes will be used, helping reduce carbon emissions and air pollution. Moreover, less fuel will be consumed, which can slow down the depletion of non-renewable natural resources such as oil and gas.
However, there are also some disadvantages to this trend. From an environmental perspective, local farmers and manufacturers may have to meet increasingly high demands from residents. To increase productivity, they may build more farms and use larger amounts of pesticides and chemical fertilizers. Over time, this can reduce soil quality and release harmful waste into the environment.
