There is a belief that it’s better to consume local food than shipping it from other countries. In this essay, I will provide arguments why producing local food gives more environmental and economic benefits than drawbacks.
To begin with, there are some financial advantages when a country can produce a lot of local food, because it helps to create new workplaces for people and develop agriculture. It also appears that such efforts might boost a country’s GDP. Additionally, consuming local food reduces food miles, as the distance traveled is much shorter. This can help reduce carbon emission and lessen the overall environmental footprint of our food consumption.
For instance, there is a well-known food salling company in Russia called “VkusVill” which has been able to become one of the biggest food stores for the last 10 years, because they manage to produce local food with quite good quality and people really appreciate them.
On the other hand, the main setback of local food production is huge investments, which include financial backing, technology resources, and well-developed logistic infrastructure.
Moreover, the weather conditions can play a significant role for developing agriculture industries. Such a list of factors might lead to the perspective that importing food will be more affordable than producing it inside. For instance, Iceland is located in a place with severe weather conditions, so it has quite a limited range of food that can be grown there, which is only fish and meat. It also illustrates that the government needs to organize the delivery of other products such as fruits, vegetables and wheat.
In conclusion, I would like to highlight that producing and eating local food can have a positive financial and environmental impact on the country, because it helps to increase a country’s GDP and reduce carbon emission, as a distance food transportation will be much shorter.
