Band 8+: Many people are moving from rural areas to big cities. Why has this happen? To what extent do you think it is a good trend?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, there is an increasing number of people migrating from rural regions to mega-cities, resulting from more opportunities for employment and a higher quality of life. I do not agree that the movement of rural people to urban cities is a positive trend.

Migration from rural regions to prosperous cities can provide opportunities for them to seek positions and earn money, as cities are relatively more thriving. It is true that these cities are normally densely populated, ensuring that the requirements of people from rural areas can be fulfilled easily, such as employment and daily necessities. Highly understaffed companies have a robust demand for workers, thereby hiring more employees to keep corporations operating smoothly and yield profits. This consideration perceives migrant workers as a top priority and can also generate substantial revenue for them. With a source of income, they can purchase goods they need, such as household appliances and essentials and can enjoy the significant improvement in their standard of living, which is impossible to see in rural communities.

While rural people can travel thousands of miles to urban areas where they can embark on new jobs and earn a living, the arrival of newcomers can also give rise to problems in terms of environmental impact and medical systems, resulting from population increase. One issue arising from the massive migration is that the influx of rural workers can fuel the demand for private cars, producing a massive carbon footprint and leading to the destruction of the ozone layer. Moreover, the population grows exponentially, which means that the masses risk suffering from infectious diseases, such as influenza and asthma. This can put mounting pressure on healthcare institutions, causing increasing medical costs and medicine shortages.

Another problem caused by the movement is brain drain as a growing number of young people choose to work in mega-cities, rather than rural areas. The youth, who are energetic and are equipped with abilities to tackle problems independently, flock to cities in search of educational attainment and employment opportunities, leaving rural regions underpopulated. They, if migrating to urban communities, will stop farming lands and grazing their animals. The loss of talented individuals will drop the productivity of rural areas and have devastating effects on rural economy. It is this vicious cycle that accelerates the exodus of working-age people to metropolises and exacerbates the labor shortage in the long term.

Overall, I strongly advocate that migration to large cities can have environmental costs and hinder economic growth in rural areas, although this action does raise the standard of living and assist them in finding jobs.
