Band 8+: Many people believe that it is easier to have a healthy lifestyle in the countryside. Others believe that there are health benefits of living in cities. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The question of whether a healthy lifestyle is more attainable in rural areas than in urban centres has become increasingly contentious in the context of rapid urbanisation. While the countryside is often idealised for its environmental advantages, it would be reductive to overlook the structural benefits that cities provide in safeguarding public health.

On the one hand, rural environments are typically characterised by markedly lower levels of environmental degradation, including reduced air and noise pollution. This ecological advantage fosters not only physical well-being but also psychological resilience, as individuals are less exposed to the chronic stressors inherent in densely populated areas. Moreover, access to natural landscapes facilitates an active lifestyle, thereby mitigating the long-term consequences associated with sedentary behaviour.

On the other hand, urban centres possess institutional capacities that are indispensable to modern healthcare. Metropolitan areas offer highly specialised medical services, preventative care, and technological innovation that are seldom accessible in rural settings. It is precisely this concentration of resources that enables cities to respond more effectively to complex health challenges, thereby enhancing overall life expectancy.

From my perspective, framing this issue as a binary opposition is inherently flawed. A more defensible position is that sustainable urban planning – aimed at reducing environmental pollution while preserving access to healthcare – represents the most viable pathway forward.

In conclusion, although rural living confers clear environmental benefits, the comprehensive infrastructure available in cities renders them equally, if not more, conducive to long-term public health when managed responsibly.
