Nowadays, celebrities have a huge influence on society, including the youngest age groups. Some people believe that media coverage of idols has a negative effect on young people. However, I disagree with such a notion for a variety of reasons.
It is true that recently, celebrities have become role models for many teenagers around the world. Therefore, their every action always has an impact, especially when it is covered in different sorts of news. For that reason, sometimes popularities’ misbehaviour, such as doing drugs, drinking alcohol, or antisocial behaviour, is highlighted and even treated as normal. As a consequence, children may want to copy their favorite idols, and, overall, get a wrong perception of the world around them. Moreover, celebrities are used to advertise diverse kinds of products. This could be overpriced merchendise or scam schemes, such as casinos. It is well-known fact that the smallest fans are the most obedient and naive; therefore, they will buy anything offered by their role model.
Nevertheless, celebrities are not the only responsible for children’s minds formation. First and foremost, parents should be aware of what kind of content their offspring consumes and restrict it when necessary. Moreover, it is their responsibility to teach their children critical thinking, such as distinguishing positive trends from negative and spotting disinformation. In addition, a recent study showed that awareness programmes in American schools on this topic has reduced pupils’ misbehaviour dramatically.
In conclusion, media coverage of celebrities has a certain impact on young minds. Despite its great influence, I do not support the idea of it having negative effect on children.
