There is a notable debate concerning whether universities should establish a list of various courses as a firm requirement, whereby only students that are able to pass all those required classes can be attend convocation, or universities should provide a more flexible condition by permitting students to take only indispensable courses that they have sufficient desire to attend. This essay will discuss both views and provide my own idea.
On one hand, the primary aim of academic institutions is to have an effective influence on various area of life of students. This leads to graduated students can be potentially ready for any types of unpredictable circumstances, a case in this point, young people may not have any prior knowledge about accounting and complex calculation, by attending related courses they can obtain essential knowledge about how they can file their annual income taxes, however their field of study can be entirely different from studying statistics.
On the other hand, studying a broad range of subjects while some are irrelevant can be time consuming and cost students a lots of effort and energy. Furthermore, by only focusing on field-related courses, students can find sufficient leisure time, and they would invest it on brainstorming of mind mapping for their future plans. For instance, people who are studying business can allocate their free time to participate in various workshops, or applying for internship in different companies.
Taking everything into account, both perspectives advocates students to enhance their knowledge, however I firmly believe that students should be able to pick specific courses which are relevant to their area of study out of all available subjects.
