Band 6+: Many people believe that university students should study a full range of subjects, instead of some specific subjects. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Majority of people trust that students in the university should study a full range of subjects, instead of some specific ones. I don’t agree with this, as I believe students, when they choose their subject of interest (specific ones) in their university, their knowledge in that particular subject becomes more advanced. In fact, their interest in the specific field will increase more.

Generally, students complete their basic level of education in their school, and furthermore, they complete their high school with a bit of an advanced level in each subject. So I believe the amount of required knowledge they would have already gained in the particular range of subjects. However, in the university, they should be given the opportunity to choose one specific subject, which would be their matter of interest. By doing this, students will not only expand their knowledge in that specific field but will also gain some real-hand skills and progress within the chosen domain. A study carried out in a German university showed that the number of students choosing a specific subject made more progress in their careers compared to the students choosing a wide range of subjects.

In terms of choosing a career, students choosing a broad range of subjects may get confused in the future, while the students who choose specific ones are clear about their future. A research done with the university alumni in Japan showed that the students specialized in one subject were more progressive than the students who preferred to choose a wide range of subjects.

In conclusion, I disagree with the majority of people’s thoughts or beliefs that university students should study a full range of subjects. Choosing a specific subject makes students advance more in that specific field. In addition, they make more progress in their career development. As a matter of fact, students increase their interest more with the subject and gain more knowledge.
