Band 7+: Many people continue to used cars & motorcycles, even though they know that they are bad for the environment. Why is this? What can be done to reduce the use of vehicles?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Contemporary society witnesses a constant use of private vehicles despite the associated environmental damages are fully aware by people. The essay will examine the contributing factors behind this phenomenon, namely underdeveloped public transportation system and valued comfort, and propose effective measures to tackle this situation.

One of the foremost contributors to the adoption of cars and motorcycles is the less developed public transportation system in certain areas. Residing in districts where buses and subways are few and far between compels individuals to rely on private cars to travel from one place to another, making car ownership necessary for a normal life. Another factor contributing to the favor of private vehicles is their promised flexibility. For instance, riding motorcycles allows individuals to choose travel routes aligning with their needs and preferences, fostering a sense of autonomy and freedom. Furthermore, private cars offer a heightened level of comfort by freeing people from packing with others in crowded buses or subways, lowering the chances of having disputes or suffering insults stemming from potential conflicts.

To reduce the use of private vehicles, multiple solutions could be proposed. Primarily, the development of public transportation system is essential for the shift away from private cars. Investments should be made to the design of various bus routes and the construction of bus and subway stations connecting different parts of a city, thereby ensuring the flexibility and encouraging the switch to public transport. Additionally, buses and subways where well-equipped facilities are installed could significantly ameliorate passenger experience. This could be done by installing built-in air-conditioning system and seats tailored to vulnerable groups of people, such as the elderly, children and pregnant women. Finally, taxation on fuels or congestion pricing could be imposed to increase the costs associated with using private vehicles and stimulates commuters to select other modes of transport.

In conclusion, the reasons behind the pervasive use of personal vehicles are numerous, including the insufficiency of public transport, the perceived flexibility and comfort level. By implementing comprehensive measures, such as constructing new bus or underground stations, upgrading infrastructure and levying taxation, societies could successfully discourage people from being reliant on automobiles and motorcycles.
