In this contemporary society, some people believe that globalization in business and culture has brought about many benefits, while others are of the opinion that this is a leading contributor to identity loss. From my perspective, I think both views are reasonable as each has its own merits.
The idea that increasing business and cultural contacts is advantageous is justifiable in a few aspects. The first reason is that this trend is of great importance in terms of boosting a nation’s economy. Nowadays, people can travel overseas to explore new cuisine, traditional activities and natural wonders. During their trips, visitors may spend money on local services, which in turn, boosting the economy of the region. Another point is that globalization can contribute to a more qualified labour workforce. With the prevalence of multinational companies, employees in an organization are exposed to diverse perspectives and new approaches to tackle a problem, fostering their critical thinking skills overall.
Despite such positive aspects, the idea that globalization may also lead to the loss of national identities is also valid. With the advent of social media and online shopping platforms, it allows citizens to get access to foreign habits, fashion and behaviors more easily than ever before, causing people to abandon their national practices. Identity loss may also occur regarding the field of language. Some minor languages are reported to be on the verge of extinction due to few people speaking them. This is because in a globalized world, it is necessary to have a common language, with English being a prime example, to execute official transactions. As a result, it may discourage younger generations to preserve the minor languages and opt for studying a lingua franca.
In conclusion, I believe that while globalization has introduced several merits in terms of boosting the economy and creating a more skilled workforce, the challenges that it poses to a nation’s identity should also be taken into consideration.
