Band 8+: Many people think that social media platforms have made people less sociable and more isolated. Do you agree or disagree with this view?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With the advancement of technology, many people argue that individuals are losing their social skills and becoming increasingly lonely. While the internet has made everyday life more convenient, I firmly believe that its negative impact on social interaction is far more detrimental.

One main reason why technology leads to loneliness is that people gradually lose essential social skills. Instead of engaging in face-to-face conversations, individuals increasingly rely on online messaging, social media, and even artificial intelligence tools to communicate. Although the internet allows people to stay in touch with friends and family who live abroad, this type of interaction often lacks emotional depth. As a result, people may struggle to understand emotions and communicate confidently in real-life situations, which can make them feel socially isolated despite being constantly connected online.

Another negative impact of technology is the unrealistic image of life promoted on the internet. On social media platforms, users tend to share only positive moments, such as achievements, holidays, perfect bodies, and luxurious lifestyles. When individuals constantly compare their real lives with these idealised images, they may feel dissatisfied and emotionally disconnected. Consequently, this comparison can increase feelings of loneliness and have a negative effect on mental health.

In conclusion, although technology has certain advantages, such as enabling people to stay in touch with their loved ones, I believe that its tendency to cause social isolation and weaken basic social skills outweighs its positive effects.
