Band 5+: Many people today choose careers in technology - such as IT, software engineering, or AI - while fewer young people want to work in manual or practical professions (plumbers, electricians, builders, mechanics, etc.). Some experts believe that in the future, there will be a serious shortage of people who can do these jobs. Do you think there will be a huge demand for manual labour workers when Generation Z becomes the main working generation? Why or why not? What can society, schools, or governments do to make such professions more attractive and prevent this shortage?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is believed, that there might be deficit of blue-collar professionals through decades, as a result of increasing popularity of academics amoung the current generation of youth. The risk of it is being estimated highly, because the tendency of choosing white-collar paths is already noticeable.

Nowadays, career directions, such as plumber, carpenter, electrician, gardener, etc. are becoming less appealing amoung generation Z, as a result of unwillingness working with hands and mistaken perception of these jobs. These jobs are considered less prestigious and less paid, therefore, the image of the manual labor workers’ routine is being misunderstood and stigmatized. For instance, young individuals assume that working as a plumber is a vacant possition only for immigrants and older men.

However, the job market in the future is going to undergo real changes, when the youngesters become those older men. There is the most possible and realistic outcome of such a disproportion altering the traditional roles: the shortage will lead to the lack in working class, which may be overgo by developing the technologies, which GenZs go hand to hand with. For example, on the factories the habitual possitions got replaced by innovations and the future picture is going to be attempted the same way.

From the other hand, digitalizing all parts of humanity’s lives cannot be the only one solution to upcoming problems, the roots of such stigmatism stem from irogant attitude from the society and employers right now. Altering the perception of these careers by providing higher wages and educational tuition aids, may result in raising its prestige and value.

In conclusion, there always were disbalances in world’s econimics and labor conditions, however, if new generations do not find it appealing to face the deficit of craftmen, the image of these professions has to be changed in order to avoid solving the problem by involving brand new approaches.
