Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 7+: Many university students live with their families, while others live away from home because their universities are in different places. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The decision whether university students should live with their families or on their own is complex and involves significant advantages and disadvantages of both options. Living at home offers financial benefits and emotional support, while living independently develops self-reliance and essential life skills. Recognizing the merits of family support, this essay will argue that developing independence is necessary to personal growth and future success, ultimately outweighing short-term home comfort.

The main advantage of living with parents is a significant reduction in financial burden and stress. Students benefit from lower living costs, which allows them to devote more of them to their studies. In addition, emotional support and practical help from the family, for example, in cooking and household chores, can significantly reduce the workload of studying. My older sister, for instance, lived at home throughout her university studies, which allowed her to devote herself entirely to studying medicine without being distracted by household chores. However, such dependence on family support may accidentally contribute to the development of addiction, which constrain the development of essential self-reliance skills necessary for independent adulthood.

Conversely, living at home can interfere the development of essential self-reliance skills. Students who are used to a supportive family environment may have difficulty coping with responsibilities related to independent living, such as budgeting, time management, and housekeeping. This lack of experience can lead to serious problems after graduation, potentially affecting their independency on adult life. While home comfort provides short-term benefits, the long-term effects of delayed independence can significantly outweigh these benefits.

Ultimately, the optimal living conditions for university students depend on individual circumstances and personal preferences. While the comfort of living at home provides some advantages, developing independence through a self-sufficient lifestyle provides invaluable benefits for long-term success. Although both options have their advantages, the difficulties of independent living are outweighed by the invaluable life skills acquired, which give students the tools they need to cope with the complexness of adulthood and achieve their goals.
