Band 7+: Mobile phones are considered essential by most people nowadays. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of mobile phones

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is believed by most people that smartphones became a crucial gadget with the rise of technologies. I think that phones bring more benefits, such as accessibility to the internet and increased productivity, into people’s lives despite their drawbacks, such as addiction and their cost.

The major positive points associated with using a mobile phone are the productivity it helps to achieve and the ease of accessing the internet. This is because this portable device allows instant connection to the online network, letting users browse, search and learn from virtually anywhere and at any time. Additionally, there are plenty of apps that aid people in managing work and their personal tasks with calendars, reminders, and note-taking features. For example, according to the New York Times Magazine, more than 65% of adults reported that using a smartphone in their daily routine gave them a chance to stay on track with their work and enhance their time management skills. Thus, integrating a smartphone into an everyday schedule offers opportunities that make everyday life better.

The main negative points associated with a smartphone is that overusing a phone may lead to addiction. Because of the many entertaining apps and services a smartphone provides, users may get tangled up in the virtual world without even noticing the real one. Moreover, many portable devices have a high price which not everyone can afford. For instance, in a study carried out at Columbia University, researchers revealed that the age groups most prone to phone addiction are children and teenagers who are left unattended. Despite these drawbacks, I still believe the benefits of smartphones outweigh them.

In conclusion, the advantages of a mobile phone, such as internet access and productivity, must be weighed against the disadvantages, such as the potential for addiction and its price.
