Band 7+: More and more children's writing and math ability are affected by computers and calculators. We should limit the use of those tools. Disagree or agree.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

With the advancement of technologies, computers and calculators are widely being used by children for writing and solving mathematical problems. Some people argue that children should be restricted to use those tools, but I completely agree with this statement.

Exposing children to these new technologies for their academic use, such as in writing and mathematics, is an easy approach to make them lazy. This not only makes them dependent but also stifles their creativity. For instance, AI models such as ChatGPT and Gemini can be a great boon for children to complete their assignments within minutes; however, children have no idea that this easy act is making them more and more dependent on the technology. Moreover, this easy strategy will gradually decrease children’s ability to research, investigate, and put in effort on any topic. It is not always guaranteed that they will have access to these resources in the future, during jobs and presentations, and in this situation, they would have no idea how to tackle this problem.

For skills such as writing, where emotion is an important factor, when children use technological assistance for this, they would not understand the meaning of writing. Furthermore, children would never get an opportunity to brainstorm for themselves and express themselves through writing. Similarly, the use of calculators and computers in mathematics might be a great obstacle for the children, preventing them from building their base in the subject matter. This can hamper their logic-building and problem-solving abilities. Letting children become so dependent on these tools at such a young age can be a problematic scenario for them in the future, where they cannot figure out the solution to their problems by themselves.

To sum up, the use of computers and calculators might make writing and calculations easier, but it significantly makes children more dependent on technology, resisting their exploration of creativity and problem-solving abilities. So, in my opinion, we must limit the use of these assisting tools, which will make them more practical and independent.
