Band 7+: More and more couples are deciding to be "child-free", to have no children, in other words. Some people claim that those couples reach this conclusion through entirely selfish reasons. While others think that they came to this decision through noble motives, such as concern about overpopulation and desire for independence. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

In this modern world, the decision to be child-free is becoming increasingly popular. Some believe that having children is a significant decision, while others assume that it is selfishness that drives people to avoid this responsibility. In this essay, I will discuss both perspectives and share my own view.

To begin with, different perspectives are common in this world, and the decision to have a child or not is a personal one. For some, giving birth is seen as a requirement or a noble act in their religion. Raising a child is considered a virtue, and they believe it brings faith and blessings from their god. For instance, the population in Indonesia increased by around 42% more than other countries in Asia in 2023. Researchers found that Indonesians believe in their cultural tradition that having descendants is a requirement.

On the contrary, many people today prefer to be child-free due to modernization and various reasons. Firstly, being child-free is popular among the younger generation. They believe raising a child is more disadvantageous than beneficial, as it requires taking on huge responsibilities and sacrificing personal freedom. Additionally, some individuals have been traumatized by their family experiences in the past, and as a result, they refuse to have children in the future. For example, Japan’s population has fallen for the 12th consecutive year, as deaths rise and the birth rate continues to sink, according to government data released in January 2023. Japan’s high cost of living, limited space, and lack of childcare support in cities make it difficult to raise children, leading to fewer couples having kids.

In conclusion, although the motives for having children appear noble and the objectives seem rewarding, it ultimately depends on personal circumstances. If one has the capability to raise a child, it is a good option. However, it is not a mistake to be childless if one does not wish to bear the responsibility.
