Positive And Negative

Band 6+: More and more people nowadays are choosing plastic surgery. Why do people have operations to change the way they look? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a phenomenon that more and more people accept and have plastic surgeries. The primary motivations behind the growing acceptance of cosmetic operations lie in economic prosperity and technological breakthrough. Personally, I firmly contend that it is a negative tendency.

One reason for people to choose plastic operations is the progression of economy. As our modern society grows consistently, individuals’ income has significantly improved compared to decades ago. Therefore, they have sufficient funds to pursue other requirements that are apart from the fundamental living demands like eating and housing. For example, some people seek to change their disfigured appearances that caused by diseases through medical cosmetic surgeries to prevent themselves from being discriminated or hurt by others once they can afford these operations.

Another reason lies in the advanced technologies. It is the considerable reduction of costs and risks of these procedures made by the cutting-edge innovations in material science and medicine, like 3D-printing and antibiotics, that makes the plastic surgeries more accessible and available. As a result, these expensive and dangerous surgeries, which were merely available for the wealthy in the past, have become affordable for the ordinary people. Nowadays, a rising proportion of people has the ability to undergo a simple operation to make their nose or eyes more attractive.

However, I believe that the prevalence of changing looks by surgeries will bring severe consequences. This trend may foster a distorted mindset among the younger generation, superficially equating self-worth solely with physical perfection and overlooking the importance of cultivating inner merits, which will lead to the widespread of consumerism. Individuals may take high-interest loans for cosmetic procedures exceeding their capabilities and may break laws to pay off these debts by stealing and robbing, thus remarkably increasing the criminal rate.

In conclusion, people undergo plastic surgeries to change their looks due to the development of society which stimulates people’s desire for a better appearance. Nevertheless, unlimited doing such operations will significantly adversely impacts on both individuals and the entire society.
