Plastic surgery has gained increasing popularity in the modern era. This trend can be attributed to several factors, which will be analyzed in this essay, along with the reasons why I consider it a negative development.
People who opt for plastic surgery are motivated by two primary reasons. Firstly, there is the preferential treatment in employment that encourages individuals to enhance their appearance. Physical attractiveness has long been an implicit standard in many fields, especially in entertainment and multimedia communications, where more appealing looks significantly increase one’s chances of being hired. For instance, many individuals working as idols might not have been approved to debut without good looks. Additionally, plastic surgery allows people to correct visual defects caused by severe accidents, making them more attractive and boosting their self-confidence. Consequently, an improved appearance helps them escape body shaming and enhances their quality of life.
However, from my perspective, this development brings more negatives than positives. To begin with, plastic surgery involves significant potential risks. If a procedure fails, it can result in facial deformities, long-term complications, or even death. A notable example is the beauty salon named Cát Tường in Vietnam, which was held accountable for several deaths during operations. Furthermore, individuals who undergo plastic surgery often face toxic and negative reactions from society, which tends to value natural beauty and criticize those with artificial appearances. As a result, these individuals are prone to stress and depression, fearing insulting comments if their past images are circulated on social media.
In conclusion, the increasing prevalence of cosmetic surgery is driven by various factors, including the desire for better employment prospects and the correction of physical defects. However, I believe this trend is more harmful than beneficial due to the associated health risks and societal judgment.
