Band 7+: More and more young people from wealthy countries are spending time in communities in poorer countries doing unpaid work such as teaching or building houses. Why is this? Who benefits more from this, the communities or these young people?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, an increasing number of young individuals from affluent nations have been engaging in short-term voluntary work in less developed countries, particularly participating in activities such as teaching or constructing housing for low-income families. This phenomenon prompts an examination of the factors motivating such engagement and assesses whether greater advantages are gained by the volunteers or the host communities.

First of all, there are a wide variety of reasons why numerous young people want to assist impoverished families. One of the chief reasons is that short trips to less developed nations to aid local communities provide a great deal of rewarding experience. For example, when young individuals from wealthy nations visit underprivileged regions such as Vietnam, they can gain a profound understanding of the misery and hardship of the impoverished. As a result, it fosters a great sense of humanity and altruism. Secondly, this situation is linked to the fact that many adults want their resume to be polished by getting involved in social activities such as teaching or providing accommodation for the poor.

It is evident that both volunteers and host communities benefit from such initiatives; nevertheless, it can be argued that young people gain more substantial advantages in the long run. On the one hand, volunteers acquire a wide range of transferable skills, including communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities, all of them which are highly valued in the modern job market. On the other hand, local communities also receive certain benefits, such as improved access to education and better living conditions due to the support provided by volunteers. for example, teaching initiatives and housing projects can temporarily alleviate some of the challenges faced by underprivileged populations.

In conclusion, young people from developed countries are motivated to engage in voluntary work in less developed regions due to both personal growth and career-related benefits. Although such activities bring certain advantages to local communities, it is clear that volunteers gain more significant long-term benefits, particularly in terms of skills development and personal experience.
