There are some concerns that younger generations would be led to inaccuracy of history by dramatized historical films and television programs if they learn history from these shows. I disagree with this view as period movies and shows are not the only source to study history and they can be used as a comparison with other sources such as textbooks and journals written by the real historical figures.
In order to capture the audience’s attention till the end, the script writers usually add some famous but not proven dramas to the shows. For instance, in The Empress series by Netflix, Queen Elisabeth of Austria was not portrayed as a beauty enjoyer; however, she actually was in the history. It cannot be denied that it could result in damage of historical accuracy and be mistaken by those who do not have a complete knowledge about what actually happened at that period.
On the flip side, the historical shows can visualize the setting of the particular time in history. The palaces and other locations, the costumes and accessories, the war battles, how people of that era communicated each other can offer the viewers more insights into history than only reading books.
In conclusion, the concern about the lack of the accuracy of history portrayed by films and TV programs is acknowledged. However, they can be used as visual presentations of historical setting and culture for young learns while encouraging them to read and research in the official sources such as records and journals and compare them with the shows.
