Musical education has play an important role in school curricula of many schools, however, if it is really necessary and bring great benefit in developing cognitive ablities applicable to other academic areas? In this article, I will analyze both benefits and detriments of musical education should be mandatory in school.
On the one hand, benefits of music education in developing cognitive ablities. Firstly, it is a useful tool, developing logical thinking and problem-solving skills. As an example, music helps students develop logical thinking because learning music requires them to remember notes, timing, rhythm, and music rules. Especially, this also helps improve problem-solving skills in subjects such as mathematics and science. Moreover, music can enhance students’ language skills, both reading comprehensions and grammars. Songs and rhymes in music help children easily recognize and learn new vocabulary. Finally, for students graduate, music can develops teamwork and communication skills. This is true for me, when participating in music clubs at the university of Houston. I had the chance to meet people with different nationalities and make new friends. These musical performances are the best ways to promoto Vietnamese culture.
On the other hand, there are many reasons why learning music cannot be applied to other subjects. To begin with, difficulty in applying music education university. Truly, some mights argue that music may not be a suitable subject for all students, and not every students has the aptitude or interest in music. This might reduce the effectiveness of teaching. Farther, for music to be a mandotory subject, school need to have adequate facilities and qualified teachers, which might be challenging for some schools with limited budgets.
Although there are some challenges in implementing music education as a mandatory subject, I still believe the cognitive benefits it provides to students are significant and necessary. Also, school should find a balance between incorporating music into the curruculum and mainting the quality of education in other subjects. A well-structered music program can help students develop holistically and better prepare them for the future.
