Band 7+: Nowadays a growing number of boys and girls within normal weight ranges have an intense fear of gaining weight and therefore get anorexia. Why do you think a lot of teenagers have a strong desire to be skinny?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In an ever-shifting society, there has been a marked increase in the number of teenagers who display an obsession with physical beauty, especially being skinny. This essay will delve into two manifest impetuses encompassing the proliferation of social media and psychological factors.

Firstly, the overriding catalyst for spiraling desires to be skinny is the proliferation of social media and psychological factors. The advent of social media has placed a premium on appearance because users may be inclined to perfect-ionize their photos prior to uploading them to social media’s accounts, such as Facebook, Instagram, and Zola. Consequently, it can exert immense pressure on adolescents to have an appealingly skinny body. For example, social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok are replete with images of slim influencers, which can create unrealistic body image ideals among teens.

Secondly, psychological factors could be viewed as another contributing factor in spurring individuals to skinny body. An affection for beauty is a universal psychology of human’s behaviors. Nevertheless, the pervasive nature of the toxic urge for unrealistic appearance is evident when teenagers have an obsession with being skinny to obtain their spiraling desires for beauty. Furthermore, issues like low self-esteem, anxiety, or depression can contribute to the development of anorexia. Teenagers, while navigating identity and self-worth issues, may see controlling their weight as a way to gain a sense of control or achievement.

In conclusion, the intensifying desire to attain a skinny physique among teenagers can be attributed to the combined influence of social media and psychological factors. It is imperative for communities and authorities to address these underlying issues and promote a more balanced and inclusive perception of beauty, while also providing support and guidance to adolescents navigating the complexities of self-image and identity.
