Band 5+: Nowadays governments in many countries spend a lot of money on works of art such as paintings to be displayed in public places. Is this a positive or negative development?

In the past, many kings particularly the Mughals patronized art. Currently, United States, United Kingdom and China expend high expenses on it that involves paintings exhibited in common locations. I consider it a favourable occurrence.

Art is a powerful form of self expression. It can be used to convey experiences, thoughts and emotions. Painters can use this medium to state their views on social evils in order to attract attention of authorities. It enables masses to connect to one another by comprehending cultural differences through conventions and art forms that make them tolerant resulting in peace and harmony in a nation thereby establishing a shared identity and a sense of belonging among diverse groups besides teaching discipline on account of adherence to rules. It becomes feasible to understand various historical events. It provides employment and develops creativity. There have been

artist scientists such as Samuel Morse, Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael Lozano – Hammer and Anna Atkins.

Art has a number of health benefits. It can enable a person to relax and relieve depression, anxiety and stress which are rampant in the present times of cut throat competition and hectic schedule. Thus it produces cathartic (beneficial effect by healing emotionally through removing negative thoughts from mind without having to use words. It improves critical thinking, speed of brain and memory. There is possibility of improving cognition, visual and spatial ability linked to academic performance and achievement. It has been found that art therapy for children with cancer may improve their ability to deal with pain and other frightening symptoms of their disease and prognosis (prediction). It also helps kids with Autistic Spectrum Disorder besides persons with trauma.

In the final analysis, utilizing a lot of funds on art is a step in the right direction.
