Band 8+: Nowadays, international tourism is the biggest industry in the world. Unfortunately, international tourism creates tension rather than understanding between people from different cultures. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

International tourism has become the most prominent sector in the global economy today. However, some argue that it fosters tension rather than understanding among people from diverse cultures. While international tourism certainly presents challenges, I disagree with the notion that it predominantly creates tension. Instead, I believe that it holds the potential to foster cross-cultural understanding, promote economic growth, and facilitate cultural exchange, despite the drawbacks it may entail.

Critics of international tourism often emphasize its adverse impacts, pointing out issues such as environmental degradation, cultural commodification, and economic inequality. They argue that the negative consequences outweigh the benefits. One significant concern is the environmental toll of international tourism, including the strain on local ecosystems and increased pollution due to heightened tourist activity. Overcrowding at popular destinations also leads to habitat destruction and landscape degradation. Moreover, high tourist numbers can drive up prices, rendering basic necessities unaffordable for the local population. Additionally, the influx of tourists can lead to a dilution of the host culture as locals may feel compelled to conform to tourist expectations, potentially undermining their cultural identity.

On the other hand, I maintain that international tourism offers considerable advantages. Firstly, it provides exposure to diverse personalities, fostering autonomy, creativity, and flexibility. For example, through interactions with people from different cultures, travelers can gain new perspectives and skills, such as language acquisition, which contribute to their personal development. Furthermore, international travel serves as a mechanism for stress relief, offering individuals the opportunity to temporarily disengage from their daily routines and gain a deeper appreciation for their surroundings. By experiencing different cultures and environments, travelers often develop a greater sense of gratitude and understanding, which can help alleviate stress and interpersonal tensions.

In conclusion, while international tourism presents both benefits and drawbacks, I disagree with the notion that its negative impacts overshadow its positive aspects. The potential for fostering personal development, cross-cultural understanding, and stress relief through travel outweigh its negative implications. Therefore, it is crucial to acknowledge and address the challenges posed by international tourism while also recognizing its potential to promote positive outcomes.
