Today, it goes without saying that more and more young individuals celebrate Western festivities such as Christmas or Haloween in Vietnam. Some suppose that they do not have any adverse effect on Vietnamese culture, while some people are concerned about their negative. I agree with both perspectives based on several reasons explained in this essay.
First of all, one of the biggest drawbacks of this type of cultural exchange is that local residents are easier to lose their sense of identity. In fact, since multiculture appeared in Vietnam, it is noticeable that Vietnamese people are more interested in foreign culture, which is different from Vietnamese and novel for them. As a result, they tend to ignore their traditional custom, especially since this problem is at an alarming rate. To illustrate, more and more English centers or malls decorate Christmas to attract Vietnamese compared to the less crowding in several Vietnamese festivities.
Second, although this type of cultural exchange has some negative impact, we need to think outside the box that it creates a chance for Vietnamese to learn from other cultures. Also, young people can bring out our tradition and make friends from different backgrounds all around the world. For example, it helps language learners find it easier to learn foreign languages through the culture of some nations. Knowing the cultural diversity not only makes humans think how beautiful life is but also helps people become close to each other.
In short, celebrating festivities in Vietnam has both positive and negative aspects. While young Vietnamese may easily lose their identity through cultural exchange, they have chances to improve theirself and advertise Vietnamese culture. For me, we should respect foreign festivals and not forget to preserve our culture.
