Undoubtedly, media plays a major role in people’s lives, by keeping them informed about the latest events. It is stated that nowadays, news companies invest on international news coverage, rather than on local news which are of greater significance for a local community. Personally, I strongly disagree with the statement and I believe that mass media should continue spending their monetary resources on distribution of global news for a number of reasons.
To begin with, it is essential to cultivate the value of global awareness. As it is widely known, people these days, live in a multifaceted and globalized society, and one of their highest priorities, is to keep themselves updated and informed about the international events. For example, by transmitting a country’s emergency status through news companies, such as the breakout of deadly floods or fires, humanitarian aid is immediately and sufficiently provided by the surrounding communities. Therefore, it is indispensable to continue informing people about international news so that core social values are not lost.
Another important reason is that people’s future plans depend on distal events. In other words, a proportion of citizens choose to study abroad, spend their holidays or even migrate based on the socioeconomic, cultural as well as the climate status of the preferred country. For instance, the worldwide announcement of the United Kingdom to exit the European Union, affected the intention of a substantial number of foreign, high- school graduates to study there due to a number of changes in the entry requirements. Hence, a person’s life choices and decisions rely directly on the international world.
Taking everything into consideration, even though local news are important for the fundamental functioning of a community, I am in favor of financially supporting the coverage of international news. In this way, not only the instrumental social values are preserved, but also people have the opportunity to meet unique and unprecedented opportunities.
